Holiday Fragrance Simmer

This Cranberry-Orange Spice Holiday Fragrance Simmer packet was gifted to me by a friend (thank you, Anita!) and now I am gifting it to you.  It is the perfect little present for the hostess of your next holiday party.   Tuck them into stockings.  Or share with work colleagues.  It is a simple, clean scent choice that can be heated, cooled, and reused.  Feel free to add your own signature spice combos to welcome in your holiday and the new year!

You can use this simmer recipe as a simple holiday fragrance enhancer in your own home or you can pack the ingredients into clear cellophane packets to distribute some holiday cheer!  Add a greeting and instruction card to share with family and friends.

Why Use A Seasonal Fragrance?

The bustle of the holidays sometimes deprives us of the opportunity to create the special moments we crave so much this time of year.  The simplicity of this recipe is not only a time-saver, but it delivers in a big way.  The fragrance blend adds a warm, spicy background layer to holiday festivities, whether it be wrapping gifts, entertaining, or snuggling in winter pajamas by the fire.  We all know our five senses contribute to strengthening memory association and this simmer blend sets a festive, warm, cozy, holiday tone.

A lovely little note accompanied my clear cellophane packet and a red raffia ribbon tied it all up nicely.   The instructions are simple and the scent is perfect for the holidays:

  1. Quarter the Orange.
  2. Put all the ingredients in a saucepan. (I love this Dutch oven for simmers.)
  3. Fill pan with water.
  4. Place on the stove on the smallest burner on the lowest setting.
  5. Refill water as needed.
  6. Can be saved and used a few times.
  7. Enjoy!

Benefits of Cranberry-Orange Spice Holiday Fragrance Simmer:

Aside from adding a fragrance backdrop to the holiday season, this spice simmer adds a little humidity to dry, winter air.  You can add any combination of spices to enhance it and make it your own.  Anise stars or cardamom pods are lovely this time of year.  A dash of ginger and nutmeg can bring gingerbread baking to mind.  A splash of vanilla will add depth and warmth.  You can also experiment with liquids.  Apple, orange, cranberry or pomegranate juice will also add holiday floral notes.  You can also oven-dry or dehydrate the fruits if you want them to last longer for gift giving.  Dried fruits still work well for stovetop potpourri and simmers

I use my simmer mixture several times before discarding.  When cooled, I pour it into a mason jar and reheat it whenever I want to fill my home with seasonal scents.  When you are finished with it, you can add it to your compost.  Not only is it clean, but it is “green.”  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
