Frosted Epsom Salt Candle Jars Lit Up

Welcome the winter season with a touch of sparkle! Whether you’re looking for an easy, fun craft to enjoy with family and friends or a way to bring cozy charm to your home, these frosted Epsom salt candle jars are the perfect project. With just a few simple supplies, you can transform ordinary glass jars into twinkling, snow-kissed decorations that capture the magic of winter. Personalize them to suit your style—whether minimal, elaborate, quirky, or beautiful.  Use them as elegant centerpieces or nestle them around your home, inviting a cozy holiday ambiance that feels uniquely yours.  The soft glow of candlelight or string lights within the frosty texture makes them a wonderful addition to your holiday décor, from the mantel to the dining table.

Supplies You’ll Need to Create Frosted Epsom Salt Jars

  • Glass jar or vessel of your choice (tall, short, round, or square)
  • Mod Podge
  • Sponge paintbrush
  • Epsom salts
  • Decorations of your choice (greenery, berries, ribbon, tiny bulbs, etc.)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Something to cover your work surface (parchment paper, newspaper, etc.)

When I made these frosted Epsom salt jars, I found that covering the work surface with parchment paper was the perfect solution. Each person in our group of four had a large square of parchment at their space. This made clean-up easy and kept our crafting area tidy. We also set up two separate workstations—one for applying the Epsom salts and another for hot glue and decorations. This system worked really well, allowing us to focus on creating beautiful designs at the table.  The messy work was kept in a separate area.

Prepping Your Jars for a Sparkling Frosted Finish

Now, it’s time to prep our glassware! One of the joys of this project is that you can select any jar or glass container that speaks to you. Whether it’s a small square jar like the ones we chose, a classic mason jar, or even a vintage find, any clean glass will work beautifully. We started by removing any labels, then used a little rubbing alcohol to erase any lingering glue residue. After a quick wash and dry, our jars were ready to shine!

To keep things efficient and fun, we kept the parchment paper workstations on the kitchen table for the Mod Podge application. With sponge brushes and jars in hand, we each had plenty of room to work without any crowding. Nearby, we set up our “frosting station” with Epsom salt on one counter, ready to coat our jars.  On another counter, we had a “gluing station” to attach any décor items with the hot glue gun. This setup allowed us to flow easily from one station to the next, keeping our surfaces tidy and the process clutter-free. Organizing this way kept our creativity open while helping everything run smoothly—a key tip for group crafting projects!

Creative Mod Podge Applications – Find Your Frosted Style!

With the jars prepped, it was time to coat them with Mod Podge—and to let our individual styles shine!  Using small sponge brushes, we began applying an even layer of Mod Podge to the glass.  This is where our creativity really took off! Two of us chose the classic approach, covering the entire outer surface for an all-around frosted glow. Another crafter decided to paint each of the jar’s four sides with a fun twist: a diagonal line across each side.  She filled the area below the line with Mod Podge and left the glass above it clear for contrast. The fourth crafter went all out, creating a pattern of wreaths on two sides and candy canes on the other two, adding a festive, whimsical touch.

What’s wonderful about Mod Podge is how forgiving it is—perfect for experimenting! If you want a perfectly straight line or decide to make a candy cane shape, any little “oops” moments can be easily wiped away with a damp paper towel. This flexibility gave each of us room to play around and design jars that really reflected our unique styles.  No worries about getting it “just right.” It was crafting freedom at its best!

A Snow-Kissed Finish – Adding Epsom Salt Sparkle

With your Mod Podge still wet, it’s time to give your jars that wintery, frosted magic by adding the Epsom salt!  This part can be a bit messy, so we took advantage of my barn bucket filled with Epsom salt, which worked wonderfully for dipping the jars without any mess. If you’re using a bag from the supermarket, I recommend pouring it into a large bowl to catch any loose sprinkles as you work. It keeps the process tidy and lets you fully cover your jars with ease.

We took palmfuls of Epsom salt and gently poured it onto the Mod Podge surfaces, watching the frosty crystals settle onto the painted designs. After covering each jar, we shook off the excess and filled in any bare spots by pressing small amounts of salt onto the areas that needed a little extra. Even without added décor, these frosted Epsom salt candle jars already had a magical, wintery glow, like they were dusted with a fresh coat of snow!

Adding Personal Touches to Reflect Your Style

With the jars frosted, it’s time to add your personal touches, and this is where each crafter’s creativity really blossoms. We had plenty of greenery, tiny wreaths, ribbon, and cord to play with, making each jar a true reflection of its maker.  I opted for a Christmas-inspired look, wrapping the top edge of my jar with a “No Peeking” red ribbon and attaching a small greenery bough with a dainty ribbon snipped from one of the wreaths. This little accent gave my jar a cheerful, holiday vibe.

The crafter who painted wreaths and candy canes on her jar added delicate touches, too. She created tiny bows using cord, dabbing them with red magic marker to add a subtle pop of color. Another friend decided on a nature-inspired centerpiece, building a larger bough at the base of her jar, wrapped with ribbon and decorated with red berries from the backyard. Finally, our diagonal-pattern crafter went with an understated look, snipping small leaves from the greenery and artfully sprinkling them along the diagonal line. Each jar turned out beautifully unique—a true showcase of everyone’s personality!

Creating a Magical Glow

Once we finished decorating, it was time to add that magical glow! Each jar was fitted with tiny wire lights, but tea lights would work just as well.  The soft glow brings each jar to life, making the Epsom salt crystals sparkle like freshly fallen snow. Each one has its own special look, casting a cozy, wintery ambiance that’s perfect for any space.

As you consider lighting options, think about the mood you want to create. Tea lights offer a flickering, candle-lit warmth, while wire lights give a steady, delicate glow. Whichever you choose, your frosted Epsom salt candle jars will transform any room into a winter wonderland. Thank you for crafting along with us, and we hope these jars bring a touch of winter magic to your home this season.
